The report is an effort to provide a body of quantitative data which will afford insights into the attitudes (as apart from personal opinions or official policies) of the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives about foreign policy, with particular emphasis on international organization and the United Nations. A survey questionnaire, containing 41 separate multiple choice questions on foreign policy issues and directed to the Members of the House generated the data for the study. The survey was conducted in January of 1975 and the offices of 309 Members of the House - or 71% - responded. The characteristics of those responding--length of service, geographical area represented and party affiliation--correspond closely to that of the entire House. Interviews for the survey were conducted in a variety of ways. Some Congressmen completed the questionnaire in writing, while others responded orally in person or by phone. In most cases, however, the target respondent was the foreign policy aide of each Congressman who spoke for the Congressman by telephone interview. CODEBOOK INFORMATION This codebook consists of a variable list that contains descriptions of the variables in the data set and lists data values and frequency counts for each. Because each variable is only one digit in length, variable numbers also serve as the OSIRIS and card image variable locations. Finally, the missing data code for all variables is "66". 1 1 ICPSR 7377 Page 1 VARIABLE LIST VARIABLE VARIABLE NUMBER NAME DESCRIPTION TERM Number of terms served. FREQ.
