KENT JENNINGS. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS WERE INTERVIEWED IN THE SPRING OF 1965 AND WERE REINTERVIEWED IN 1973. THE STUDY IS CONCERNED WITH THE EVOLUTION OF POLITICAL ORIENTATIONS AND INTER-GENERATIONAL INFLUENCES UPON THAT PROCESS. THE PANEL IS DESIGNED TO ASSESS POLITICAL CONTINUITY AND CHANGE ACROSS TIME FOR TWO BIOLOGICALLY RELATED GENERATIONS. MAJOR QUESTIONS ABOUT LIFE-CYCLE, GENERATIONAL, AND PERIOD EFFECTS CAN BE ADDRESSED WITH THE DATA. AT THE CORE OF THE STUDY ARE A NUMBER OF STANDARD POLITICAL VARIABLES AVAILABLE AT BOTH TIME POINTS. FOR COMPARISON PURPOSES A NUMBER OF NON-POLITICAL VARIABLES ARE ALSO PRESENT. SINCE THE SAMPLE WAS DRAWN FROM A UNIVERSE OF TWELFTH-GRADERS, "DROP-OUTS" (APPROXIMATELY 26 PERCENT OF THE AGE COHORT DURING THIS PERIOD) WERE ELIMINATE THE NUMBER OF STUDENTS INTERVIEWED TOTALED 1669, 186 OF WHOM WERE BLACK. THE PARENTS WERE SELECTED RANDOMLY SUCH THAT FOR ONE-THIRD OF THE STUDENTS THE FATHERS WERE TO BE INTERVIEWED, FOR ANOTHER ONE-THIRD THE MOTHERS WERE TO BE INTERVIEWED, AND FOR THE REMAINING ONE-THIRD INTERVIEWS WERE TO BE OBTAINED FROM BOTH PARENTS. WHERE THE DESIGNATED PARENT WAS PERMANENTLY ABSENT, THE OTHER PARENT OR PARENT- SURROGATE WAS INTERWIEWED. INTERVIEWS WITH AT LEAST ONE PARENT WERE OBTAINED FOR 94 PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS(1562 CASES), AND WITH BOTH PARENTS IN 26 PERCENT OF THE CASES, FOR A TOTAL OF 1992 PARENTS ALTOGETHER. SINCE MORE MOTHERS THAN FATHERS WERE HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD IN SINGLE-PARENT FAMILIES, THE SAMPLE OF PARENTS INCLUDES 56 PERCENT MOTHERS. PANEL RESPONDENTS 1973:OF THE 1669 YOUTH WHO COMPLETED THE 1965 INTERVIEW, 1119 WERE REINTERVIEWED IN 1975 AND AN ADDITIONAL 229 COMPLETED MAILBACK QUESTIONNAIRES FOR A TOTAL OF 1348 (80.8 PERCENT). OF THE ORIGINAL 1562 PARENTS, 1118 WERE PERSONALLY REINTERVIEWED AND 61 COMPLETED MAILBACK QUESTIONNAIRES FOR A TOTAL OF 1179 (75.5 PERCENT). MORE DETAILS ABOUT THE 1973 DATA COLLECTION ARE PRESENTED IN JENNINGS AND NIEMI, GENERATIONS AND POLITICS. WEIGHTING INFORMATION THE PANEL FILES CONTAIN NO WEIGHT FACTORS. THE WEIGHTS WHICH WERE CONTAINED IN THE STUDENT-PARENT SOCIALIZATION STUDY (ICPSR 7286) HAVE BEEN DELETED BECAUSE NO MEANINGFUL DIFFERENCES WERE OBTAINED WHEN THE PANEL DATA WERE ANALYSED WITH AND WITHOUT WEIGHTS.
